HOW TO REACH KOCAELI

By Air (Via Istanbul)

The Turkey's busiest airport, Istanbul Ataturk's Airport is only 110 km to Kocaeli. Istanbul's other airport, Sabiha Gokcen is around 50 km away.

Landing to Ataturk's Airport you can take the subway system from inside the terminal building. Follow the signs of "Metro". In the subway there is only one line and only one direction, no possibility of losing his/her way. With a 20 minutes ride reach ESENLER station. In Esenler you should change to a special train going only to the Bus Terminal approximately in two minutes. Esenler Bus Terminal is said to be the World biggest bus terminal, this claim can be true so don't be surprised by the size and the complexity of the building, try to find below mentioned bus companies:
Efe Tur (www.efetur.com.tr),
Asya Tur (www.asyatur.com.tr),
Gurkan Seyahat and Kocaeli Seyahat
These companies have regular services in every half an hour to Kocaeli (Also regularly called Izmit). The service takes 90 minutes to reach Kocaeli center (Halkevi Station)

Landing to Sabiha Gokcen airport makes you much nearer to Kocaeli, but there is no direct public transport. You can take either regular buses of HAVAS to go to Harem Bus Terminal (In the Asiatic side of Istanbul). From there you can look for the same bus companies mentioned above. From Harem it only takes 60 minutes to the center of Kocaeli. Or you can use your bargaining skills with the taxi drivers waiting in front of the airport's terminal. Although all the taxis are equipped with proper counters, for long distances it is not surprising to settle the price beforehand. 80 to 100 TRY should be a correct price for direct ride to Kocaeli center.


By Train
Layout of Turkish railway system is not too complicated and from Istanbul there is only one line going to east. So if you can reach Haydarpasa train station (a fantastic building from 19. century) near the shores of Bosphorus, all the trains (with the exception commuter's trains) stop at Kocaeli. Especially Adapazari Express leaving every two hours is recomended.

By Bus
Turkey has a fantastic Intercity bus system. So, If you happen to be in any Turkish major town you will have a daily direct service to Kocaeli. The bus terminal is outside the city, very close the TEM highway. There are regular services which take only 10 minutes from city center to terminal and vice versa.
Efe Tur (www.efetur.com.tr), Asya Tur (www.asyatur.com.tr), Gurkan Seyahat and Kocaeli Seyahat has their own offices inside the city center and they are organizing free of charge shuttle services to the terminal


By Car
It is preferable to use TEM highway to reach Kocaeli. The city has three entrances from TEM, They are Izmit West, Izmit Otogar (Bus terminal) and Izmit East.
To reach the hotels in the center of the city Izmit Otogar exit is preferable, for Ogretmenevi and Seka Hotel Exit West is better, for Derbent Uygulama Hotel, Exit East is necesssary.

 

 

HOW TO REACH KOCAELI UNIVERSITY UMUTTEPE CAMPUS

Those who will come by car following TEM highway and planning to go directly to the campus should use Izmit Otogar Exit. Leaving the pay boots, follow direction of Kandira, after the second viaduct follow the sign of KOCAELI UNIVERSITESI HASTANESI. Leaving the houses behind the road becomes like a narrow mountain road with very nice scenery.

From the city center and from the campus there will be regular shuttle services for the participants of Symposium. The exact time table the road these shuttles will follow will be announced before the symposium.

During the Symposium there will be extra signs inside the town center to show the directions to Umuttepe Campus of Kocaeli, also inside the campus there will be extra bi-lingual signs.

Going from Kocaeli to Umuttepe Campus by his/her own car can be a bit complicated for a first time visitor. If you click this map you will get a much bigger one with a lot of information and direction.
